Student Spotlight - Tyler Floyd

1. When did you join the gym?

I joined mid-August of last year.

2. What got you interested in boxing and what keeps you coming back?

I've been a fan of martial arts and combat sports for a long time, I just never took the plunge into actually training. Once I got started, I really enjoyed the progress I was making. My first goal was just to learn how to wrap my hands, and I could barely finish a round or two of the workout at the end of the session. Now, my goals are a lot more specific in terms of technique, and my cardio is better than it has ever been. What really keeps me coming back is sparring. I love being able to test myself against different types of boxers, and seeing where I am strong and where I am weak. Nothing reminds you of a bad habit better than getting belted in the face.

3. What's your favorite punch?

Left hook to the liver! Micky Ward style. I'm still learning how to get to the body effectively, though.

4. Which exercise makes you give Coach the stink eye?

Those stupid barrel roll waltzes. I always end up scraping my elbows.

5. What are a few of your hobbies?

I have way, way, way too many of those. I'm big on scale modelling, I collect military surplus, I love motorcycling. The list goes on!

6. What's one thing that people might be surprised to know about you?

If you've trained with me more than once, you probably know me pretty well. I tend to wear my heart on my sleeve, for better or worse. For those who know me, I guess you'd be surprised to find out that I can actually take things seriously sometimes.
